Plaza of Nations "MAY" go bye-bye
Good morning all... Some of you already know about this, but for the general community, I thought it important to keep you in the loop as this has been one of our favorite venue's to host shows.
The reality: the proposal is in to the city to build a casino at the Plaza of Nations site and it is looking very positive that they may do it. What does that mean? -- No more parties at the Plaza of Nations... period. When? -- If approved, things could begin as soon as this summer. Some minor details can be found here: http://www.canada.com/vancouver/news...1-31FC331C63F8 Cheers. |

One way to get around the rave scene and the perceived drug problem it has.
Open up a new casino and get thousands of more people addicted to gambling instead and increase the poverty in the Downtown Eastside. Sheer brilliance I tell you! :n: |

This the most pathetic and stupid thing I have ever heard. Than they should legalize a better and bigger venue. However I know this will be either really hard to do to virtually impossible to do. Correct me if i'm wrong?
thanx for the info kraig. |

Not impossible. I mean you have to put together a good proposal and presentation to show the venues General Manager.
The problem is finding a venue with as easy public transit access and as much popularity as plaza has. I really hope riverside doesn't become the main venue anymore. PNE will probly dominate now... meh im sure. I know this sucks though. |

that's complete bullshit. Where are the big parties gonna be now? It'll suck if they always have to be out of town. We should all make signs and h.....no that's stupid. I dunno i guess we really can't do anything about it.

Plaza of nations wasnt going to last as a rave venue anyway, Plaza operations loses money every single year. The only reason it was purchased from the B.C governemnt after expo was because the current owner intended on developing it into a hotel. That site holds raves and conventions simply because they want the cash flow to offset the debt as the site was primarly seen as an investment property that could be developed in the future. Its was either gonna become a hotel, casino or more highrises regardless there wont be raves there much longer into the future.

OK, First the Plaza of Nations is currently in disscussions witht he city for approval but nothing is confirmed thus far. They are going to be holding town meetings on it and see where that goes. The downside is that the city and mayor included are all in support of it which will make it extremly hard for them not too get approval. Please also keep in mind that 3 new venues will be opening their doors in the next 3 - 5 years in Vancouver and Richmond. If all that does go through just remember with the end of an era like this I know myself and a few others have been talking on the down low about the last and final show at the Plaza of Nations before it closes its doors to interior events. The outside stage will still be available but as we all now can only be running during certain times of the day. I try to remain posative in these times but the next few years will be tough for venues but this scene survived before when there were no venues and I am sure it will continue to grow. As far as GM Place as a venue it is not going to happen anytime soon. They want way too much money for the space unless you now any Rave audience members that wish to pay $200.00 a ticket to get in. PNE will gain a few shows a year I am sure but there venue is costly too! There will be some challenging times ahead but with groups like Twisted, Swing Kids, Agro Culture, Shy Bros and all the other promoters in the city I now we will find a way to continue delivering the best possible shows that possible can be delivered regardless of venues. This entire things has nothing directly to do with the rave scene it was a directors decsion regarding their property and profit outlooks. And really there is nothing that we can do. Unless everyone does want to picket the venue. Now that would be interesting!!!!!!! Local News would love that!
Stay Posative. G |

The Plaza of Nations stands for the backbone of our very new scene. Such a venue is very rave across Canada and especially North America. It's multi-level, multi-room, theater, escalators, carpeted, easy public access and holds a pefect amount. Even if you hate the Plaza (which is stupid), you must agree we are extremely fortunate to have it. I have talked to some who have played across Canada and the World, who have stated the Plaza as a very unique venue that we are lucky to have. That said, haters and non alike, the Plaza should get the credit it deserves. It will be a sad day when the Vancouver scene losses it.

A casino of that size should easily generate more then a couple hundred million dollars in gross revenue for the operators |

I love Plaza as much as the next person (read into that what you wish...lol...actually, I do prefer it for big parties particularly because its close to home) but lets be realistic. Plaza hosted how many parties last year? Six? Eight? Running it as a casino on a daily basis has to be more economically viable for Plaza's owners than keeping it for parties. If this was untrue, then I'm sure they'd stick with keeping it as a party/other venue. Plaza wasn't built for raves by ravers - and we have no more right to the venue as anyone else willing to plunk down their cash.
Personally, I'm trying to think of it as a positive...maybe it'll get people thinking of new places to throw parties besides the current venues (yeah, I know its a lot of work to get a party approved and permitted, probably more so for a "new" venue). |

Bare in mind people. With plaza gone though...this will definitly have some effect on the scene. However, like some people have stated it will generate tons of questions for the partiers and for us promoters. I'm sure that there will be a whole lot more underground parties when plaza closes to raves permantly IF the casio does go through and sounds to me like it will. If i'm not mistaken KISS 2, Twisted 2004, Fusion Dreams 2 will be the few last parties being held at the Plaza of Nations. Also like Lamz has said...we have way too many casinos in all over. If this does go through let's make these last few parties a worth while to go to and to party it up like we've never done before. RAVE!!!!!! |
