yeah well, who cares if ppl are going to loot and sell shit? why not put more force into the ppl that are causing havoc , with all the violence and such. Sure its stealing, but if the businesses have insurance, who cares? Its going to be months before ppl can return to their homes, so anyone thats left kickin around after the evacuation is still going to steal shit... it just wont be out in the open.

armed people knocking down baricades to steal from family businesses with the families still inside, the burning down of an entire mall, etc etc etc

you can not distribute supplies to people until you have order. you can not have order until the law is set by some sort of governing body, and not by people who are bigger and stronger who happen to have guns. food trucks/busses/police officers/firemen shouldn't have to deal with dodging people who will charge a retirement home bus full of elderly people to get to the water inside.

people are not waltzing into stores and taking what they need. people with guns or who are large and intimidating are taking what they want and fuck everyone else.

do you not think this food/water in stores would be better distributed by an organized body, and not by some opportunist filling up his truck with as much as it can carry?

Sure, they are slow to bring relief, but I wouldn't call them unprepared because they obviously foresaw the epic pile of bullshit this disaster would bring the city when they told everyone TO GET UP AND LEAVE.


You also have to understand that relief is slow to move in because it has to be a safe environment for everybody to successfully help people, the past few days it hasn't been due to catastrophic flooding and now, a handful of people who want to ruin it for everyone.

This is what amazes me about the whole situation though - how on earth did order break down so badly? They knew way ahead of time that potentially the most powerful hurricane to ever make landfall in the US was on its way - they are supposed to be (in this 'nothing will ever be the same' post-9/11 world) prepared for emergencies and catastrophes of unimaginable scale...

So where were the contingency planners? The military? The disaster response teams? The stockpiled supplies in case of disaster? Why is there no order a full five days after the hurricane? Somebody (or a lot of sombodies) fucked up royally on this one. And looting, death, and anarchy are the results.

None of us have enough information to pass any significant judgement on almost any aspect of the disaster or the relief effort.

All I know is that I saw a shitload of urban centers under a fuckton of water.

chaos and fear can do awful things to society - look at bahgdad and the stampede they just had where over 1000 people were trampled to death because someone yellled out "suicide bomb"

i just really hope that more aid is givin to all the areas affected by the hurricane, and i hope canada starts sending some more help other then money from the red cross. (more human help\helicopter help\communication help)

Vancouver just sent thier search and rescue squad. First time they have ever been deployed outside the lower mainland. These are the same guys who were on their way to help with tsunami relief only to be turned back at the last moment.

the situation wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the levee's bursting.... First there levee's are built EXTREMELY poor. Supposively it only consists of primarily sand and soil and some rocks..... Portions of there levee just liquified and collapsed.... Worst thing about it is with the water rushing in its eating up the rest of the levee.... What they need to do and have huge fuckin boulders within the new levee as one of the main forms so this never happens again.. And now because the ground is all saturated around the city of new orleans there is potential for alot of building collapses because the earth with just shift.... They are going to need to dig up all the roads to lay new piping and everything....

And with the situation there in right now.... its going to be the disease outbreak that will kill the people the most. Guess there not gonna have mardi gras for a few years....

it seems like there is no organised body to distribute anything in that region, so what the fuck would you do in the same situation?


you would be right if all those people who were looting and stealing were stealing for profit but from what ive seen on the news alot of those people who were looting were stealing for survival and after that they were ever distrubting food and water to the people waiting outside of the skydome or whatever that statidum in new orleans is called.

p.s the government pretty much slept on this and no one realized that things would get this bad, it just seems like everyhting is poorly organized, so what the fuck would you do?

1. Reduced funding to reinforce & repair the levees, money instead went to (shock!) Iraq
2. Populace ignored evacuation orders & suggestions until it was too late
3. Levee failure was much faster than expected
4. Because of #2 30,000 (approx) people ended up in one central location without proper planning or supplies
5. Limited National Guardsmen since a bunch of them are in (shock!) Iraq
6. Armed populace mentioned in 2 & 4 becomes desperate and does desperate stupid things like shot at relief

Add huge storm, stir and serve rowdy.
