To reply, I mentioned Sasha because it was relevant, because he makes huge cash as a DJ (a producer who DJs and tours etc), and if he didn't declare huge performance earnings on his taxes he'd be in jail. period. :) Now, there's a difference between "pro" and "superstar headliner club /festival circuit" as well. Pro wedding DJs are people who do weddings on weekends, have a business license, write off equipment etc as expenses, and pay taxes on income. They don't have to be rich or glamerous. Ditto for commercial club djs, or just (imho) smart "mixologist" artistic djs. I used to DJ as my #1 source of income -- but went to school again, got kind of side tracked, and have been focussing on other rewarding stuff for awhile. I'm not playing a lot of DJ gigs these days -- however -- I still write off music purchases, gear purchases, computer upgrades -- as part of my music business, a business that includes CD sales, some touring, and a radio show I do weekly. I don't have to be earning 6 figures or even touring internationally to get a business license -- that's in your head. :) To be considered a "professional" does not mean you can't have other income or even a day job -- just that you do it professionally, in one way or other. So basically, I refute your point of view, as ignorant and not very well thought out. :) |

oh and also, the thought that Dave Armstrong does not get any gigs -- even if you look at his backyard (Canada), in cases where international DJs don't get a lot of respect in their home countries -- I have friends that have just booked him on the East Coast, where he is very popular and they can vouch that the statement "he gets 0 gigs" is complete BS! :)

It is a choice you make, just like everything else in life.
You choose who you wish to work for, and you choose what the value of services are worth. I know lots of djs that get paid, I know lots of djs that don't. I've never heard either bitch or complain about their situation. Maybe it is not so much that all djs aren't being paid but that you are one of the ones that aren't??? Besides your logic is slightly flawed. Hookers charge for sex, but there are plenty that give it away for free...and many of both that would call it a talent or a service. So should we start a Sex Union??? I think the whole point behind being a 'contract' employee is that you are free to set your own rates. So set yours as you wish and let others set theirs as they choose... |

A good question to ask is, if you do it for the love.. is that just love for yourself and your own enjoyment and position in the big picture of things? Or is "doing it for the love" better defined as doing it not only for your own enjoyment but also love for your fellow djs and the dj community/culture itself and wanting djs to be appreciated, respected, and treated well.. not taken advantage of. Correct me if I'm wrong, but most promoters in this city have the main objective of getting people to play for as cheap as they can get them to do it. Promoters take advantage GREATLY of the fact that we all love what we do and that most people just want to play. One thing I will also say right now is that anyone who's been actually playing for more than 2 years and has played a decent amount of shows in that time should NEVER be playing for less than $100. If you are a promoter trying to scam someone like that just to make more $ for yourself it's just disrespectful and weak. All of you DJs have a responsibility to yourself and to the DJ community to stand up for yourselves and for djs in general. If everyone did that then the standard will be more solid and less people will be taken advantage of or undercut by someone who doesn't care and is desperate to play for as low as it takes.
