I feel like im getting shafted becuase 1) some promtoers who make enough to pay DJs DONT 2) Im providing a service and spend $100's a month on records. Why would'nt I DESERVE to be paid for usuing my equipment and entertaining their costomers?

The problem lies where we have some promoters and DJ's who dont think its right or nessesary to pay DJ's what they deserve.

Do you people understand what makes you a proffesional DJ ??

It means that you do it for a living, IE: getting gigs over seas, getting your tracks on ESTABLISHED labels, and Paying taxes for it.


What I dont like is how people here call DJ's talented because they are friends or know them

as a lucky mofo who spent lots of weekends at lotus when tyler stadius and tripwire were residents, i'd have to say i'm a little biased towards the both of them.

that being said, both of these guys are huge, and just because some wanker doesn't know about them here, that shouldn't downplay their accomplishments.

mr. stadius posts his touring schedule here, at least he used to, and if you'd check it out, it reads like a wet dream of vacation destinations.

i dont know and i dont really care, though im pretty sure compensation should be based on how much they can draw to the party.

either way you miss my point, if your getting shafted then why do you still play out? you wouldnt play out knowing what you do if there wasn't somehting other then money that was motivating you.

I think you learn that people treat you the way you let them so it's always key to be able to negotiate from strength. I think everyone is frustrated these days because there are so few events and venues that you have competition between amatuers who are trying to gain experience and professionals who are attempting to make a living. In my opinion only the top 1% truly make a decent living and a majority of them produce. Everyone else should do more promoting so you can see it from the other side of the fence as well as supplementing your income if done properly. DON'T DEVALUE YOUR PASSION as it is truly priceless, music is the reward. The gift to be able to control atmosphere and soundtracks to the masses is a special talent. I like the idea of a dj minimum wage but i don't think a dj union is necessary. Good thread!
