Pretty sure we beat England and people were sore losers about it.. now that Portugal is on a "short leash" England has a better oppurtunity.. but really.. is that fair? nope.. so in the end, even if England did beat us.. i dont think it would be much of a win.. i will give credit, when credit is due.. jus like C.Ronaldo.. good player, over rated.

People talk about the reffing (over here as well) in Holland/Portugal as being bad, and use the fact that there were a ton of yellow/red cards as evidence of that. Umm.. I guess there were a lot of yellow cards, but there were also a lot of rough challenges, time wasting and headbutts that warranted them. Are you blaming the ref for the fact the players were assholes to each other?
Apart from a couple of over-reactions I thought the officiating was decent, but I seem to be in the minority. Not nearly enough talk about Argentina vs Mexico, which was the game of the tournament so far, with apologies to Australia vs Croatia. As for England... what can I say? No game they've played (since their pre tournament 6-0 drubbing of Jamaica, anyways) has been particularly comfortable. In fact, after the first half I basically had the thought that "If this is how every game is going to be, I almost don't want them to advance. Just lose now so I can stop feeling equal measures of anxiety, disappointment and frustration." The 2nd half, however, was a marked improvement. Beckham's winner was sublime, Rooney showed traces of brilliance that were all the more enticing for the fact they occurred near the end of a game played in 35 degree heat, meaning his fitness is progressing amazingly well... and the defence was rock solid. Did Ecuador have a chance in the entire second half? I mean, I know they're not world beaters but a lockdown is a lockdown. Jim I got $20 on whupping your Portuguese as well, if you're game :) All tournament England has been playing down to the level of their opposition, and while, granted, we'll have to do the same against your team, the difference won't be as marked. Now hurry up and accept, before Figo gets suspended for headbutting and you start to have second thoughts.

^my main problem with the officiating in todays game was that the ref was unable to control the players on the field. All this was sparked by numerous questionable and missed calls. One in particular was when portugal had clear possesion of the ball and was on an advance and then there was a stoppage due to downed player. Undoubtedly the advancing possesion is awarded to the advancer. This was not the case, the ref was so out of position that holland immediately jumped on the ball and began play again. Include this on several challenges by both sides that were questionable to say the least in the early stages of this match and you have a recipe for disaster.
As for your bet, I'll bloody well take it. I've already taken my own uncle for nearly a bill on his doubts on portugal. And he's probably the most knowledgable soccer fan I know. For some reason I think you should be the last person betting with your recent track record. =P

In closing, god forbid that anyone remembers that portugal hasn't been beaten in their last 18 international games.
Or that FC Porto in 2004, fielded by mostly portuguese players was one of the most dominant teams in recent UEFA Champions League history. Keep on forgetting the small nations. It'll only come back to haunt you. Last edited by cubed; Jun 26, 06 at 04:13 AM.
