Best CD's to record music on to?

Background: I download music from iTunes which I also use as my music player on my MacBook.. which I also use to burn CDs. I've been using FujiFilm CD-R's (because they were cheap - I won't doubt this is the problem) and have been burning at 1x (thinking that this would increase the sound quality of the burn - it hasn't).

~ My problem is that these CDs sound much MUCH quieter than any of my other CDs (but in-the-red on the meters - ??) and to get to the point.. it sucks to mix with.

Any suggestions/tips?

cd is a digital medium, it doesn't matter sound-wise what kind of cds you use. only reason to choose one cd over another is build quality, as cd's will eventually degrade and their signal will be unreadable.

your sound problem will be in your burning/mixing program/mp3 player.

so using iTunes as my burning program is the problem then? are there any setting I should change, or am I SOL w/ iTunes.

& my mp3 players are Denon DN-S3500's CDJ's (but I don't burn mp3's anyway)

Yeah, skip iTunes. Use Nero. What's likely is that iTunes is normalizing the mp3s and causing them to decrease in volume when it's decoding them. I'm not too sure as it's been a while since I've touched iTunes, but there could be an option for normalizing that's turned on.

There's a box that is checked in the 'burn disc' options: "Use Sound Check" .. could this be it (Normalizing)?

yea use Nero. Burn at a slow speed. Get a new Cd burner. Make sure its not your gear itself making the audio crap out

I'd say those two pieces of advice are useless. As rawb said, it's a digital media. All that the burner gets is 1's and 0's. It's the software that decides what those 1's and 0's are, not the hardware. Speed shouldn't matter either. If it's going too fast for it to burn properly then the disc itself would be corrupted and you'd get artifacts in the disc, not low volume.

edit: heh, outposted. =)

yea i would say its his mixer or amplifier. Slower burns = less error rate but its not like hes burning a redbook CD or anything.

I remember an older RCA cable caused my left cdj to kinda no deliver the high end. check that as well

Sounds plausible. Give it a try without, test it out, see how it works.
