Why did you get into DJing dance music?
Hey guys,
I was being interviewed the other day and I was asked why I got into DJing. I said it was because I love the music, and I do, but I couldn't help but wonder why I an other DJs do what we do. Why did you get into DJing? |

Nice one Sean.
Like you bro, I got started way back when and are still DJ'ing today for the music - I'd also add wanting to share that music with other peeps. Back in 2001 it was specifically Breaks. It was by listening to the tunes Precise, Czech, Vinyl Ritchie, etc. were dropping at the time that had me searching for funky beats. Over the years, it's taken me a good long time to find "my sound" but funky best describes that. Quality productions and fun & funky beats is what it's about! |

the music.
bedroom djing was pretty much our only way of staying connected with the scene when it died out in the early 2000's in smalltown northern bc. it gave us something to do on the weekends. but now the last couple years me and several others took it upon ourselves to bring the scene back, it's been an awesome feeling giving back to the community that initially inspired me to dj. |

1- there are few thing in this world that can replicate the touch and smell of opening some post with a few fresh presses in it, or digging for endless amounts of time to find a crazy tune
2- i have grown out of all of my previous, and many, artistic outlets. i needed one that was current, fun, and did not seem like a chore. so i guess this, along with production, is my artistic outlet. 3- its alot easier to control what tunes you play at your house parties. 4- if you dont like titties, your not human. |

Kinda tough to say. I wouldn't really pigeonhole it in any of the categories listed. Above all I'd say a chance to contribute to the party...
If I just did it for the music, I'd be a bedroom dj. If I just did it for the celebrity, I'd probably be pushing for a lot more recognition. If I did it for the drugs, I'd do drugs a lot more often. If I did it for the titties, aw, who am I kidding, everybody loves titties! I dunno. For me it's always been about the party. Not the music (can listen at home), not the drugs (also can do at home), not just the people (can meet up elsewhere where there's no loud music and I'm not too busy making a mix to socialize)... the all-encompassing experience: the party. I dunno, I suppose I could check off all of them because they're all factors, but ultimately if the crowd isn't enjoying it, I'm not doing my job. |

Ya, I play about every other Friday at the Eatery and an occasional LLW, as Dave Dirk.
I got an (older, outdated) mix on Five By Five (listed alphabetically by DJ, look for Dave Dirk - This Is Not A Photo Opportunity). Hopefully have a new mix up soon, but no promises. |

Where's the 'all of the above' option? :p
When I started it was because I liked the music. Over time though I've grown to appreciate the opportunities it has afforded me to travel. Money isn't really a factor as I was never pulling more than a few hundred a week at the best of times. Having pretty ladies hanging around you can be cool, but its murder on relationships. Free drinks are definitely good in my books as well. I'd say that the best parts of DJ'ing now are the friends I've made over the years. There're alot of unsavories in clubland and I've met my share, but I've been lucky enough to have met some pretty great and driven people in my life and I wouldn't have crossed paths with them had I not been in 'the scene'. |

when i discovered it i didn't know anything about it. i went to a party my friends threw and i wanted to try it out. i didn't know what d'n'b was but i was a d'n'b DJ. i like the process of it. i like beatmatching and putting this open ended puzzle together. i saw the possibility of creating a subtle art in it. it's never been a priority to be famous or get paid or even have people like it en masse much like visual art. i don't necessarily give a shit if people like it, i like to do it for it's own sake. i wish more DJs didn't view it as a means to an end. i wish more people didn't view being creative as a means to an end.
