any tips for someone who wants to get into dj'ing? (publicly)

I know I'm my own worst critic. I don't feel I'm great at dj'ing, I know I have my moments tho' (some great!, but of course, more I don't want to remember..heh). I just know I've wanted to do this for a Long time.. but didn't have the ba**s to.. Well I think I've grown some now (or just realized I don't want to waste anymore time wondering.. heh), .. so if anyone has any tips on how to go about getting started, getting heard, the do's and the don't's (might be more important than the do's.. heh).. any tips on how to 'engineer' mix CD's (recording, etc.) ~ please help me out, thanks a bunch.. ~ B

start promoting your own events, book yourself to play the opening time slot. eventually play better time slots. make a good quality mix and pay to have it professionally reproduced, then give away as many as you can. good luck!

Pretty much what Senior said. Make a promo, pass it around, go around to nights that play the type of music that you wanna get into and just start networking.

- Listen to your own mixes and remember what you would change each time you listen
- Record Demos and spread them around like a bad std!
- Stick to what you love playing! NEVER CHANGE YOUR STYLE JUST TO GET BOOKED! Or you wont have fun and you won't be as good as you could be!

Other ways, are just bring a shit load of people to an event, then harass the promoter to book you,
after that just bring out a ton of people, and you're set. who cares if you suck!

Besides all the practicing and learning your tunes etc, practice playing out! Starting out small with house parties and stuff will give you time to get used to mixing in shitty environments, recover from disaster, as well as build your confidence and deck steez. Don't rush to play bigger things until you're ready and you feel confident with your ability. A good impression and attitude will eventually lead to more gigs.
