Logic Express vs. Cubase? Advice? Help!
Hey guys,
Hope you all are doing well! I now have a Mac and haven't produced in a while. When I did make tracks a few years ago I was using Cubase. It has been a few years and I only learned the basics so I am considering getting into Logic when I start up again in the weeks to come. Two questions: 1) Can anyone recommend one over the other? 2) For Logic. Do I need to get Logic Studio or will Logic Express suffice for now since I'm jsut using a midi keyboard, VST synths and thats it. Thanks in advance! You guys rock! ~Sean Gallagher |

you're better off getting logic 8 over logic express - it's down to $500 brand new now.
can't tell you whether logic is better than cubase though. Sounds like logic is the program of choice on mac and cubase is program of choice on pc tho... Last edited by dj_soo; Aug 24, 08 at 07:12 PM. |

i love logic and hate cubase but it all comes down to how you work. i find logic really easy and fast to mo through. cubase, not so much. logic 8 is massive too. tons of quality samples and vsts. personally i'm still using logic 5.5 'cause i use a PC but both my roommates have 8.

^^^^Same deal^^^^
I use Logic 5.5 for PC as well. I haven't used cubass very much so my opinion is biased, but Logic can do pretty well everything you want. There's a few functions in Ableton that only Ableton can do, so what I'll usually do is effect what I need to in Ableton and just drop audio back into Logic. For me I've noticed that every program has a sound to it. As in the algorithm used to put the sound out of your computer at the master bus of the program is different with each program and tends to colour the sound. Logic just sounds so damn crisp. You want Logic 8 though. Hell I want Logic 8. |

Logic & Cubase are essentially the same, the differences are mostly cosmetic. it can be hard to get used to one if you've spent a long time using the other, but once you get past the differences in layout, all the functions are pretty much identical. The biggest differences are a) Mac owns Emagic so Logic is only available for that platform, and b) Logic Studio costs a lot less than the equivalent version of Cubase (SX3).
Global - if you're on a PC and using Ableton i'd highly recommend switching to a recent version of Cubase, if only for the ability to run Ableton as a Rewire slave and eliminate the need to be switching back & forth between 2 programs. to answer Sean G's question- if you're on Mac, i would buy Logic 8 without the slightest hesitation. for that price, it's a no-brainer. You can still re-wire in 5.5
Only problem is I have the most ghetto computer ever. It's amazing what you can do with a couple drum machines, a couple synths and some samples. Re-wire absolutly eats my CPU. We're switching to Bevvy's Macbook but the process is slow and painful...and we still need Logic 8. But...here's a tune we made on the ghetto set-up. All you really need is Logic and some VST's.
