Rave music & what you love

Remember back when you first discovered electronica?
When you first started 'raving'?

What kind of music was it that really mad you love the rave and/or the electronic music scene?
What kind of music, if no one was watching, would still make you get up and want to 'rave'?

If there was an event that made you go to hear something you miss, what kind of music would it be?

Definitely speed garage (I still rock it all the time).. also breakbeat and techno, circa 1994-1998. Those were the kinds of music that always got me goin and got me dancing. =)
My guilty pleasure way back when was trance, the uplifting kinda fluffy feel-good kind. lol

If I find someone playing funky disco house, I'll still get up, dance, and sing along with my eyes closed like I used to.

wow that was a long time ago. I guess it would be Big Beat/Breaks that first got me into the rave culture. Fatboy Slim, Hardknox, Proppelerheads, Chemical Brothers, Lo-Fidelity All Stars, The Crystal method .. It was all quite mainstream and accessible in the late 90s, even for a 12 year old- you could turn on the tv and see a Prodigy video on much music. So once i started getting into those artists I started litening to more underground "rave" genres like speed garage, goa trance and jungle.

Pretty similar story for me. All the artist evil mentioned are what really opened the door for this new spectrum of sound. I was listening to a lot of hip-hop and was really getting into NIN in the late 90's, so hearing some sick break beats and some crazy synthns and samples, it was easy for me to drench myself with all this crazy new music.

Eventually i picked up a few rave flyers and it was me chasing a rabbit down a rabbit hole, because I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. It started off with a lot of hard-house and trance, but in the summer of '99 I discovered dnb at summer love, on the beach stage. I can remember just being so enfatuated by the non-repetevines of the beat. Mind you it was some old skool jungle i was hearing at the time and not your standard, conventional dnb beat. The rest is history.

Just before the major rise of "electronica", just before Stardust and Fatboy Slim, when Chemical Bros and Daft Punk were just breaking.... I went to London. In London I went to Portabello Road and heard a tape playing in a small novelty shop with some music I had never heard before and immediately fell in love with. I bought this tape for 6 pounds and ran it into the ground until I lost it.

Later I would learn that this was Acid Trance and early NuNRG. The two songs that I heard in the shop that caught my ear and never let go were:

I'll have to agree with the Speed Garage for me too!

'92 '93 Tech House - Bleu, Man, Mig (and whatever #, heh), Paranoid, Random
-early early Aphex Twin

~
'95ish - Hard Trance - Rave Inc., Nutron Intelligence, Source Code...

(( "Decksandrumsandrockandroll"!! ))

Gotta agree with that Commander Tom track too... first time I actually heard that track was on a Chris Sheppard mix tape (DogWhistle: 2 Hi 4 Humans)... Heh.... '96

~
'97ish ~ ~ HAPPY HARDCORE!!! "I wanna be a hippy and I wanna get stoned on ... .Mari~Marijuana!!!" HEHEHEHEH..

Hard House/Drum & Bass

After the 'new millenium' I pretty much stayed with DnB ... AK1200 (still my fav dnb dj/producer to date) .... the pioneers like Aphrodite, Goldie, Jonny L , Zion I, ,..... ... some Squarepusher, ........

Psykosonik ( self-titled album.... i think it was they're first album (??) '93 or something, i had the CASSETTE TAPE.. - cover had a digital face on it, some tracks were "Techno Jihad" , "Crank Freak") that album was Great! All I needed was the auto-reverse engaged and I was set!!! ... If I heard that right now, I'd definitely get up and bust a hip!! Hah.

Last edited by just.b.cous*; Jun 15, 09 at 05:49 PM. Reason: auto-reverse!!!!
