You're not even old enough to get into bars. How the hell do you know what's going on in Vancouver's EDM scene?

does this even qualify as news any more? vancouver always lands amongst the top few cities in any sort of survey like this. too bad it's so culturally isolated and carries with it vestiges of its hickville past. vancouver is incredibly beautiful and really does have a lot to offer, but it's still a bit of a cultural backwater, isn't it?

Its all in where you go, if your kickin in surrey i can see how you would be pretty jaded. I do agree that its hardly news, we take alot for granted. Is this post based on surprise or just pride?

I agree. I think we all have to remember "most liveable city" does not mean "best city to live in." I'm getting kinda sick of this survey being smeared across every local paper everytime it comes out. Vancouver is a beautiful city but for how small it is it's extremely overpriced. Vancouver is not a New York, London, Tokyo, San Francisco or Paris not even close. Those are the cultural epicenters of the world. If you read the entire report it goes on to say
"Global centres such as New York, Tokyo, London, Hong Kong and Paris may find themselves let down precisely because of their size and attractiveness. Traffic congestion and higher crime rates associated with large urban centres have, to some extent, offset the obvious cultural gains of living in such locations." (over a city such as Vancouver)

This report is based mainly on mundain factors like safety. Just because somewhere is a safe place to live doesn't make it culturally or intellectually stimulating.

YEAH BUT TO LIVE IN THOSE PLACES COSTS A LOT MORE THAN LIVING IN VANCOUVER. THEY ARE GREAT PLACES TO LIVE, BUT TO DISCOUNT VANCOUVER BECAUSE IT WAS SETTLED <200 YEARS AGO IS KIND OF SILLY.

THERE ARE ONLY A HANDFUL OF CITIES WITH DEEP HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE, THAT DOES NOT MEAN THEY'RE GOOD PLACES TO LIVE. I MEAN, THE WHOLE MIDDLE EAST AREA IS STEEPED IN HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE, PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT AREA IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND. ISRAEL/PALESTINE (RELIGIOUS CENTER OF 3 RELIGIONS) AND IRAQ (CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION) ARE NOT GREAT PLACES TO LIVE.

I was refering more to their impact on modern art and culture. You can live in London and witness the birth of new genres of art and music first hand. Vancouver is a very young city and it does suffer in comparison because of that. It is also growing in expense faster than it's developing in character.
You don't get much back (other than awesome scenery) for how much you pay here.
It still needs a lot of time to grow and aquire some depth.

sorry to be a hater I like vancouver I really do I just think this survey is a little overblown.

I think FMPJunkie sums it up well. Vancouver's chief detractions have less to do with history and more to do with its geographic and cultural isolation.

Many cities in the West are culturally homogenous. The opportunity for short travel breaks from Vancouver to culturally distinct places is non-existent. How far do you have to fly before you get to a place with a foreign primary language? The quality of Vancouver's galleries and museums is poor. Much smaller cities in Europe can support much more interesting exhibitions than Vancouver can. Many travelling exhibitions skip over Vancouver. Vancouver doesn't have much in the way of recurring festivals, fairs and events that are rated internationally. Nothing like the Venice Biennale, London Design Festival, Paris Fashion Week, etc. While Vancouver has a high immigrant population, the diversity of that population is not high.. Vancouver is missing many of the trappings of cultures that you'd find with a little more diversity.

But, of course, there are many things to love about Vancouver and the things I've mentioned aren't important to everyone.
