Did you read it on-line or in the paper?

I read the paper and it made me sad. For personal reasons.

There have been articles in the past about Vancouver’s party scene. I think its just funny that the people mentioned in the article I know.

i love the "underground" parties in houses and warehouses around vancouver, theres at least 2 a week and they are all over facebook.

Really missed the mark on a few things, and was pretty accurate on others.

This is the one problem when a new story is filled under "commentary" or "investigative report". There are few facts, but they are written to be quite sensational.

Articles like this are able to bend the truth without any backlash. It is very obvious that this article is bias. I haven't been to any sort of rave in over a year, but I don't remeber them being how this person described.


The article itself jumps between points, without really tying them all together, so I'm not sure what they are trying to prove. If there trying to "expose" that people will do drugs, hang out, drink illegally, then I think common sense beat them to the punch.

Some of it is... but some underground parties I have been are exactly as she wrote.


I usually end up going home early because Im disgusted.


This is why I prefer going to club events to see DnB/Breaks acts.

as much as i am disappointed in the article, lets face it, the vancouver after hours scene got caught with egg on its face. they found the worst of the worst, of course they are going to play it up.

parties like these make it hard for those that are trying to do it legally.

Technically journalists have agreed to report the news, not notice a few facts, and fill in the blanks with whatever they feel like.

Investigative reports are the worst for this. Technically they don't have to have any fact verification...

A lot of the stuff in that article is true, but they make it out to be a bigger issue than it really is. Drug use is obviously always associated with this, but if you go to any nightclub/stripclub/pub, you'll see plenty of people on coke and other drugs as well. Drugs are used everywhere, not just at afterhours places.

As for fights and whatnot, I've never felt in danger at any afterhours event I've been to. There may be some sketchy people, sure, but I don't think I've ever seen a fight at one. At underground raves, sure, but not at an afterhours.

They also make a big deal about $5 water. Have they not checked prices at nightclubs? I think the cheapest I've found water at a nightclub is $4. Places like Red Room are usually more. Also, if you're paying $20 to get into an afterhours, another $5 for water isn't that big of a deal.

One thing that stands out about the article is something that's not there, and that's a lot of coverage on legal shows. People doing coke at Gorgomish is pretty much the extent of legal shows. I'm also suprised they didn't bring up Fridays at the Basement (they only bring up Saturdays). If they wanted to bring up drug use some more, there's the place to do it.

I gotta give them props for bringing up 300 West Hastings. That place rocked. The music was awesome, the venue convienient, and it was always a pretty tight crowd.

Wait, wasn't that where A New Hope was supposed to be before the venue got canned because of other promoters not being able to keep their party people in check (and thus negating the venue for everybody)?

If anything it'll introduce yet another generation to the concept, and we'll start to see increasing popularity in the scene again. Then it'll get oversaturated, cops will start busting the lazier promoters and it'll disappear underground again, and then all of a sudden someone will throw a party like Gong Show out of nowhere and then it'll just quiet down for a bit.
