Man gets 25 years for microwaving baby for 20 seconds

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) -- Minutes after a jury sentenced him to 25 years in prison for severely burning his daughter in a microwave, a teary-eyed Joshua Mauldin listened one more time to details about the pain he had caused his child.

Joshua Mauldin will serve 25 years for putting his infant daughter into the microwave for 20 seconds.

His daughter Ana's foster mother fought back tears as she detailed how after being injured, the girl's left hand was so burned that there was no skin, no muscle, no fat, only tendon and bone.

Ana suffered second- and third-degree burns to her left ear, cheek, hand and shoulder and has required several skin grafts. Part of her left ear had to be amputated.

Her foster mother, Heather Croxton, testified about Ana's screams as she's undergone painful surgeries and physical therapy that will continue for years.

"There is no excuse for your actions and I hate that one day you will be set free and allowed to move on with your life while Ana continues to pay for your actions," she told Mauldin during her emotional victim impact statement Wednesday.

Mauldin, 20, was sentenced after jurors deliberated for 6½ hours over two days. They also fined him $10,000.

Jurors had rejected Mauldin's claim he was insane at the time he put his then-2-month-old daughter in a Galveston hotel-room microwave and turned it on for 10 to 20 seconds. They convicted him Tuesday of felony injury to a child.

Just before putting her in the microwave in May 2007, Mauldin had punched Ana and placed her in the room's safe and refrigerator.

Prosecutors had wanted Mauldin to be sentenced to the maximum of life in prison

Insane or not, rehabilitation shouldn't be an option.... you cant fix a piece of shit like this. Taking him out back of the courthouse and shooting him would be a much better idea.

Microwave ovens work by using electromagnetic waves to force polarized molecules to vibrate the kinetic energy of which creates heats.

Polarized molecules are molecules which, due to their atomic structure contain atoms which are attracted to negatively charged atoms as well as atoms which are attracted to positively charged atoms. When a wave of microwave radiation passes over a polarized molecule the polarized molecule will try and align its positive and negative attractive atoms with the alternating charge of the microwave. Basically the alternating positive and negative electric bands of the microwave make the polarized molecules rotate (Think about a table covered in long, thin magnets, if you move a strong magnet underneath the table the magnets with spin to align their north and south magnetic poles with the magnet under the table as it passes). This rotation produces kinetic energy which is dissipated from the polarized molecules as heat.

Depending on the level of exposure to the microwave radiation there are various implications. For starters your body is 80% water, and just as if you microwave a glass of water, microwave exposure will cause the water in your body to heat up and that heat will need to dissipate through your body. In areas were there are fewer blood vessels (veins, etc) to dissipates the heat it can cause breakdowns of proteins in your cellular make-up which can cause everything from cellular mutations to outright killing the cells. A few areas are obviously more prone to damage than others: cataracts can form in the eyes and the sudden elevation in temperature can lead to organ failure and it ain't too good for your brain either.

well if you put a full size chicken in there for 20 seconds, it wouldn't even get remotely get warm. do microwaves magically know when a baby is in there and become 10x more powerful? I guess so.
