people who argue for marriage are completely deluded and/or brainwashed about what it is. marriage is and has always been a legal contract for the acquisition of wealth and power and the control of women. the sad thing is that our culture bombards women into thinking they need marriage from birth and most of them can't even start explain why they want to. mostly due to there not being a good reason to get married (other than acquisition of wealth and/or power and guaranteed-ish sex).

as for your parents and most marriages that work, they'd probably be together regardless of if they were married or not. think about it: you can have all the good things perceived to be exclusively associated with marriage without marriage so why bind yourself in a legal agreement and bog yourself down with the bullshit that IS exclusive to marriage when you can have all the good with none of the bad?

If the marriage meant anything you would wait until you could have a perfect one with all your friends and family instead of rushing it because it's "the right thing to do." If you're rushing because a baby is on the way then it would seem the married was out of necessity rather than love. A marriage doesn't have to be a certificate of oppression or power, i can be just a ceremony for you and the one you care about.

I'm not mincing words, it depends on how you conceptualize the term communion. I'm using it to show an intimate relationship between two people, not as a religious concept. I wasn't trying to disprove your concept of power, it has weight in many respects obviously. I was just showing that it doesn't have to be all about that. When you think something is a certain way it tends to turn out that way, but when you open your mind to an alternative concept maybe the world isn't so cold.
