I knew this day was coming since Summer Break ended last year: Summer Break 07, I just hoped it wasn't going to happen.
Don't be suprised if they never let you use Popkum again. Frankly, I don't buy this "death in the family" thing. Not even the death of a Chief has a mourning period like that. I think that's just the excuse to cancel this year, and once it's gone, it's gone. |

^ you said it much more eloquently then i am going to.
alla, seriously, shut up. apex is not an event i can pick up and move into the deep woods. not to mention, i pride myself on doing the right thing and being 100% legal and safe. picking up and using an illegal venue is not an option. i need at least 15 acres for the stages and another 30 for parking. |

considering no doubt Avana probably approached more than half a dozen other possible venues. What I was ACTUALLY reffering to is the venues turning down Apex; this goes back to the stupid stereotypes that revolve around "raves" and the other draw back... money. It may get technical, but in the big picture its simple. Only way to get people involved properly, is money... and alterior motives; Merrit and Pemberton have those big sponsors to pull in the sought after $$, and tickets at 350$ (which can accomidate a decent price tag for renting the venue, and pristine bragging rights for the venue). I say it again... at this time big venues, look for corporate sponsors to draw in the big bucks, and a party like Apex doesnt go beyond the 10-15$ mark. Sorry to say but North America is just too greedy, and just does not cut it for a place to have a healthy party scene in. |

Forget about the drugs altogether, let's look at what pisses normal people off about raves: - Noise (BIIIIIIIIG ONE, and quite honestly, this more than anything will get a rave busted) - Vandalism and violence in the area (fights breaking out outside, cars keyed, cars and landmarks driven into by irresponsible partiers) - legalities and permits (a lot of the time also involves law enforcement in addition to private security being required to set up at the venue. Even if someone else is handling all this, it's just more hassles that people want no part of, and ultimately if things go really sour it's the venue's owners that get their reputation and city record fucked with) - not to mention site damage (stages wanting more room encroaching on the brush, also go peruse some of the old apex threads for stories about overturned porta-potties) |

Thats a different story, the event started smaller and went bigger, but the crowd at Shambhala is ALLOT more diverse than the typical ones you see in Vancouver.
Ive seen big scale events go strong without sponsorship, Exitfest in Serbia for instance went for the longest time as a political protest, then it formed itself into a large scale festival. Being voted one of the largest and best in Europe, on par with Creamfields, Gatecrasher, etc. Noise is a big factor near residential, but in situations like the old Apex grounds... I have never heard a noise complain in regards to Apex EVEN from nearby residents. Campers have claimed they hear a light hum in the distance but nothing to be considered a complaint. Main concern was/is the crowd according to one of the Sheriff's from Abbostsford/Chiliwack. Yet again, going back to the stereotype. Your right, stereotypes exist for a reason, but they cant survive without something to fuel it... in the end the crowd. |

No, that's not what i was saying. I wasn't saying there are spots big enough to have a party like Apex. I replied to your post because you said there is nowhere left to do parties in Squamish since M36 got shut down, but parties did happen in Squamish since, and i do believe there are other great spots in that area that could potentially be used.

In regards to throwing a big event in BC... im pretty sure if anyone approached a venue saying you have Coca-Cola, The Beat 94.5, and Heineken as official sponsors for a Music Showcase Festival... they would be more than happy to work with the event coordinators. But too bad its never that easy in Canada. Hence why we dont see many festivals Canada-wide as Europe... Last edited by BenGiovanni; Jun 08, 08 at 04:30 PM. Reason: exco |
