Voting for a party doesn't mean you buy into their entire platform, I think what it comes down to a lot of people is, "who's going to fuck me the least". Seeing as how a large chunk of our country is populated by farmers, agricultural workers, people who live in rural communities, it's not hard to see why conservative values apeal to them. Vancouver isn't the world, and contrary to popular belief, the image of vancouver 'thinking' doesn't mirror that of the rest of the country.

Deal with it.

Hey Goat, I think we're all aware that it's not Vancouver that dictates the mentality of the entire country, it's Toronto. At least, that's what they'd like to think.

I didn't realize there was a Vancouver way to think, because if you look at who Vancouver voted for, ridings are split between all 3 major parties.

i mean if you wanted to find a place that had a specific, defined mentality, you would look to one of the areas that's a sea of blue, wouldn't you?

not that im expecting any serious answers, but can someone explain to me how we moved from a liberal govt to such a strong conservative govt?

i chalk it up to 3 things, but i'd love to be corrected:

1. merger of the Reform and Conservative Tory parties
2. split of left wing parties (ndp, workless, green, Socialist(tm)) siphoning liberal votes
3. installation of fear of the unknown due to the threat of terrorism and economic woes

couple of reasons:

1) Liberal quebec scandal lost them a rack of historically Liberal seats to the bloc
2) general Liberal 'fatigue' where incremental bad decisions/party "scandals" reduce confidence in other ridings, allowing their closer ridings to go to others
3) the world in the past 10 years has been electing more right-wing parties due to economic/fear problems
4) Paul Martin/Stephan Dion lacked the charisma of Jean Chretien
5) have been seen as the 'established' party for so long we are still in a political hangover of Liberal governments being seen as a 'change'

Conservatives were a nothing-doing party for a long time.
