i know a dj that had been playing for a fair amount of time and had his slipmats sitting on top of that rubber mat technics come with....never clued in why his decks at home weren't as slippy as the ones he played out on...this dj will remain nameless...except I'll say he plays dnb/jungle.

as a newb dj, i guess im fairly biased, but i think that no matter how long you play in your bedroom, your still gonna fuck up during your first few gigs, cos playing on a big mixer and a big system in front of a lotta people is alot different than practicing in your bedroom.
but i dont feel that really matters, cos newbs usually get shitty timeslots and empty houses anyways, so who the fuck cares if thier mix was a little sketchy? unless some newb is getting a better timelsot than you, marty, i dont see the issue. |

it is pronouced... tech"nick" not technique anyway, as for for noob djs, we where all there at some point, and im sure every dj has a horror story about one of thier first gigs, but when you are stepping out to your first gig.....dont step up with 2 months exp,....know what you are doin before throwing down!..train wrecks wil happen, but when its the whole set.....its kinda annoying that being said, im all for noobies, i love to see new talent, as ashes said..... bev:never have been a jealous person.
its a hobby. I just hope that when promoters stop booking them that they dont quit spinning. dec: you agree with me then dissagree? Its obviously not a weak post since pretty much every dj that know's a bit about the scene, their hobby and their music has replied to it. Last edited by ppcock; Jun 25, 05 at 03:24 PM. |

I agree with ppcock on this one. I have a lot of respect for the good dj's in this city but it seems there are very few of them. It''s definitley good to see new "talent" being booked and hopefully injectign something new into their respective scenes. That being said, there's nothing worse than having to listen to some dj shit on the decks for an hour, call it a set, have his or her friends tell them it was good. Nothing wrong with enthusiasm and wanting to get out and spin but if you can't hack it and take a gig anyway, you deserve to be rassed or whatever else comes your way.
I could care less if some person I've never heard blows me away or not, but if you can't spin, keep it in the bedroom and work your way up to crowd that doesn't just consist of your friends. |

i agree with marty too, but only to an extent. everyone sucked at one point in thier career, right?
the djs i have a problem with are the ones whove been playing out for a long time, and continue to get booked, only to fuck up every other mix. i feel a fuckup grace period of six months playing out if sufficient, but after that, one should really have his/her shit together. |

yeah.. i was sucking back on the cd deck days. But now i make sure all my sets that I play live are flawless. Mixing is spot on, beatmatching is perfect and the ability to hold a mix for as long as I can.
And to this day I have never, ever planned a set. |

I agree Jess is a fine dj. He's been playing techno longer than I have. But the issue is he's not constantly practicing. When I first played with him, he hadnt practiced in months and I spun circles around him.
And If IMF has 4 turntables (there is a 2X4 im told) then I will do a 1X4 banging techno set. Ofcourse when I mention it on the IMF post, all the puds are still talking about stupid non-party related things. |

INDEED!
my problem is I have times where I can't touch the decks for a month and then its like starting all over again :) I'm inconsistant! Quote:

Honestly Jim
and I dont mean to offend you jess If jess was playing out and he absolutely sucked major ass.. Would you be straight up with him and told him what was wrong? I would.. He'd probably like to know what was wrong more than what was right. How can you possibly get better if people dont properly critique you? Like Candy-Kid. |
