So you can pretty much stfu about that one as Canada operates effectively as an independent nation. The G.G. is there to sign things and get their picture taken... aka waste Canadian Taxpayers money. The things we sacrifice in the name of Ceremony and Tradition.

Rather spend a billion dollars having the G G signs things and have his or her picture taken than have the gong show we call American politics.

Besides, it's nice to actually have some history.
God knows, it's not like we waste billions on other garbage (take your pick).

The ancestors and the founding fathers of confederation fought more then for everyone for a "RIGHT TO VOTE". I can go on and on about it however it would be lengthly. However I can assure you that if they ever saw into the future over the past few decades... They would literally be in tears on how this country is being managed.
Wow dude. I guess I cant complain about some un-educated Brits and Aussies who arnt aware that Canada is a commonwealth country. Some Canadians proof to be just as "stupid".

Marty doesn't have a point of view.

I'd say he's a lot like tofu, just sort of sucking up what ever he's around at the moment.

To be absolutely honest, I did not. I recently moved to Ontario so I'm not really current on what's going on around here so I decided to clean my apartment instead. Er...I did see Jack Layton in the gay pride parade this year though.... He looked like he was having a blast... but that's about all I know about Toronto :| hah.

They should hand out your GST cheque after you vote. No vote, no cash!

There was a CBC article with a report of up to 2/3 of students being turned away at a polling station near Dalhousie, for not having proof of address. Probably similar all over the country.

Depends on where abouts in Toronto you are. The neighbourhoods of lower income are usually NDP and the Liberals take everything else.

Mainly it's the Liberal stronghold in Ontario though. A couple pockets of NDP: Toronto-Danforth and Trinity-Spadina. Other than that, once you leave the GTA it's Conservative and NDP with the odd little patch of Liberal.

They didn't check my address. I forgot my card at home and I just told them my name and they responded "is this your current address?" I replied "yes"

Then at the polling station I gave my drivers license with my old address and the guy didn't say anything.

I had to ask a homeless guy where the polling station was because they moved it from the address on the card.

Sadly it is a problem this year and not just for students as people across Canada (except Ontario) are finding out that even their passports are no longer enough. Its a recent requirement that many Canadians are not aware and are learning too late.

Options:

A) License/Provincial Photo ID w/ address

B) Govenment ID (SIN, CC etc, passport) AND authorized papers w/ matching name and address (Credit Card Bill, Bank Statement etc)

C) Have a qualified voting citizen in your riding w/ photo ID make an oath that you indeed live at the address stated (neighbored etc)

I dont understand that with the disappointed low voting turn outs that they would make the process any more challenging than it could be.

My attempts to vote were stymied by the vigilance that the people at your polling station apparently lacked.

I don't know, is the card they sent me, along with picture ID with my name on it (admittedly an ancient address) not good enough??

Shredded all my mail from my last address just before my move, so I didn't have anything else to bring in.

:-/ a bit put out by all this, since in the epic battle evidenced in this thread between "active participants in the democratic process" and "defensive excuse-makers", I tend to fall in the former category.
